Fighting Cocks
Fighting Cocks  ★★
Only three of us again today as Clive wanted to paint a house.

When we set off from the car park beside the Fighting Cocks it was rather dull and unfortunately it stayed that way for the whole walk.  Nevertheless we had an enjoyable time and included a few tracks we had not been on before.

After a short walk along the road we turned onto a small track that took us  into the edges of Sandy Balls Campsite.  This area of the site was pretty deserted at this time of year.  There are some lovely old trees in this area but they are starting to look rather stark and bare now.

Before the Mince Pies

We crossed a small tributary of the river using a new looking footbridge and then walked along the road to the viewpoint at Castle Hill where we sat on a handy bench and had our break.  As Ray and Rob had both bought mince pies this week we had a bit of a treat!

After the break we went into the woods and meandered around a bit as there were o real paths to follow but it sheltered us from the little bit of drizzle that had started by then.  Passing the cemetery we entered Godchild Inclosure and found our way across to the south east edge following a few paths and on occasions making our own.  The heath on the other side was surprisingly dry but the path from the heath back to the car park was a bit muddy in places.  The field on both sides did however provide some interesting views and the donkeys are always nice to see.
The Fighting Cocks was pleasant, warm and welcoming.  Rob thought the portions were a bit on the small side but the lambs liver was very tasty and enjoyed by all.

A thought for those on a health kick:If you currently eat more than 90g (cooked weight) of red and processed meat a day, the Department of Health advises that you cut down to 70g.
Ninety grams is equivalent to around three thinly cut slices of beef, lamb or pork, where each slice is about the size of half a piece of sliced bread. A cooked breakfast containing two typical British sausages and two rashers of bacon is equivalent to 130g.

Deer Sanctuary Car Park
Queens Head Burley  ★★▲

This walk was rather unusual.  There had been a lot of rain so I had planned to walk towards Burley and back along the cycle tracks but Rob complained that he had already "done the Canadian" dozens of times. So we decided to set off without any planned route and to wing it!

We set off following a similar route to Ray's walk on 9th September for the first mile and a half.  This gave us another opportunity, the first for Rob, to see the winking tree.  So we sat and posed this time.
When we reached a gate half way along Puckpits Inclosure we entered the woods and followed a small track along the fence line and then followed a series of paths leading down to Holm Hill.
It was a very pleasant day and although the wind was pretty fierce it was dry and reasonable warm.  This encouraged us to take a fairly circuitous route from Holm Hill back to the car. The tracks were mostly fairly dry but we ran into some difficulty as we reached the northern end of this section.  The path turned into a rather deep and soggy marsh.  Turning west we had some fun crossing an area that visibly moved as we walked over it.  Some created more movement than others!  It was just as much fun coming back across the same patch.  Eventually we went east to higher ground and found a way through.  So on to the footbridge - well not quite - we couldn't find one and had to heroically leap across the stream.
The remainder of the walk was not too eventful thought he slope up from Coneygeer Bottom to the cycle track was quite squelchy.
Most of this walk consisted of tracks that we had not been on before but there are still many more to investigate some other time.  As everyone really enjoyed this walk that is something to look forward to.

We had a good lunch at the Queens Head in Burley.  You can't grumble at a nice piece of gammon, two eggs, chips and peas for £6.49.

Beside the old well on the edge of the village
The Haymore ★★

The route was recorded by Rob who is now a master of the iPad and OS MapFinder.
Write up by Ray.
Having arrived at our starting point next to the old well the heavens opened and we were unable to
even put our wet weather gear on for over half an hour. When we did start off back came the rain but it soon passed over. It was quite muddy under foot in places but nothing us old timers couldn't manage. The area has a lot of permissive paths so we were able to deviate from the normal rights of way when ever we wanted.
We ended up at the Haymore for lunch where we all enjoyed a nice plate of fish and chips .
