On a day that was almost ideal for walking we parked on the land just opposite Chettle Church. We walked along the track and then turned down along the well marked track that runs across the fields to the east of Chettle House. The house itself is currently undergoing some very major renovation work and is surrounded by scaffolding.
This route is part of the Jubilee Trail and we followed this as far as Chettle Long Barrow where turned off towards New Barn. Although it does not look like it on the map the walk up to here is through some pleasant wooded areas. We then moved into some more open land where there were some ancient settlements and we noticed how different it must have been when the footpaths were first established. There does not seem to be any reason now why they should follow the rotes that they do and it might be testing to cut off a few corners when there are no crops growing.
We were also puzzled as to why the path goes down to the road at Farnham and then almost immediately oft again. It would have been easy to cut this corner off but we were very pleased we stuck to the footpath. There was a good reason for our pleasure! It gave us a chance to see the lovely old Wesleyan Methodist Chapel that has now become an attractive home. Perhaps more importantly, as we walked through the maintenance yard leading back to the track we met a few people working on a very large tractor and then we spotted a handy looking picnic bench. A polite request and we were readily invited to sit there to enjoy our habitual break. Ray supplied Irish Fruit Bread. Peter supplied home made Energy Bars and it was almost like a feast.
A short walk across some more fields and we were back on the Jubilee Trail which took us all the way to the car. There seemed to be numerous orchards that had been rather let go and apples left all over the ground to rot away. What a shame.
We returned to the Lambs Green Inn for lunch but we were rather disappointed. We had chicken pies. One was rather dry inside the other was OK. The cabbage had lots of black mould and was very undercooked. The carrots were overcooked. The service was indifferent. Nothing like the quality we have been used to in the past. Yes we did make our views known and no we did not leave any tips.
