There had been loads of rain before this walk and it showed! The road past Candies Farm was impassable and we had to head back and along the road before turning right onto the footpath. Good views from the top over the Stour Valley. We hit some further problems around Knoll Manor Clay Pit where the road was again impassable. A kind local landowner allowed us to cross her field and rejoin the footpath above Henbury Plantation. All went well after this until we tried to find a route through Corfe Mullen itself. The footpaths shown on the map seem to have been taken over by house building. We eventually found our way over to the Roman Road and headed along some damp paths back to the Lambs Green Inn. The last stretch of the road just before the pub was also under water but luckily not deep enough to go over the top of walking boots - we walked slowly and for once nobody was making waves.

An easy route to follow with no obstacles. I don’t think there is even one stile. Snow and rain had left the ground a bit soggy but nothing impassible. Not too exciting but good to get out and have a decent amble on a dull chilly day.
A good walk mostly through attractive woodland but with some fields and heathland. A few styles and short climbs but nothing too strenuous. The ground was reasonably dry even after a fair amount of rain.
The footpath starts just across the main A351 from the Sandford leading out towards Wareham Forest and returning around Decoy Heath and Gore Heath. This is a good area for walks and one we have visited several times. The paths are generally pretty good even in wet weather. One short cut did however prove to be hazardous and Peter's boot became waterlogged. Rob's spare socks came in very handy.
We spotted an illegal camper who made himself conspicuous by the large volume of smoke from his fire. Some forestry work was being carried out and a rather impressive machine was guillotining the trees, turning them horizontal and stripping off the branches in just a couple of minutes per tree. The forester was not too impressed when told about the camper! |
