This walk starts and finishes at a small lay-by just off the A354 about 2 miles west of the village of Charlton Marshall. There is just room for three cars to park here on the lane leading to Sparrowbush Farm.
We headed up the road towards Grocombe Farm and the Adventure Activity Centre. In spite of the rather chilly start to the day, looking across to the northeast we could see a large number of people going around the track on quad bikes. As we progressed on towards Charlton Down and East Down the track was quite tricky as it had been torn up by horses. In several places it was however possible to walk along the field edges. It is a reasonably good climb to Charlton Down but there are some excellent views across the open farmland surrounding the area.
There is a large badger set on the path to the west of Little Wood with some warning signs, presumably so people don't fall in!
The route is quite easy to follow and is well marked until coming out on to the A354 by South Lodge. Walking along this road is unpleasant as there is no path and only a narrow uneven edge. A footpath is marked going into V Plantation. It is however very overgrown and there is a steep bank but this becomes easier to manage if you walk a little further down the road.
